20 Little Known Facts about Doc Momma

recently auditioned to be on a talk show about women psychologists-sort of a “The View” meets “Dr. Phil.” I made it to the final round of auditions but did not make the final cut.

I lettered in both cheerleading and chorus in high school. I was the captain of the varsity cheerleading squad and was a first soprano in my school’s concert choir.

When I was little, my grandma won a trip to Disneyland through a “Wheel of Fortune” contest. She graciously sent my mom, two of my siblings, and me to California to live it up with Pat (who was shorter in person) and Vanna (who was prettier in person) while taking on Space Mountain.

When I started college, my major was civil engineering. Then, pre-med. Then, nursing. Then (finally), psychology. I still could have graduated early thanks to earning lots of college credits through AP courses but elected to stick it out the full 4 years (which was still shorter than the 5 years it took my hub to graduate).

My hub and I knew what we would name our son long before he was ever born. Actually, long before we were even married. We saw the name on a jersey of a retired basketball player during a Clemson basketball game and fell in love with it. And no, Banks is not a family name.

I lived in Toronto, Ontario, for two years during my childhood. I actually attended kindergarten in Canada but had to repeat it after moving back to the good ol’ US of A-I guess we Americans don’t trust the Canadian educational system. Or maybe I didn’t grasp the concept of a triangle. I choose to believe the former.

I would love to own my own cakery one day. I love, love, love to bake and decorate cakes and cupcakes. There are just not enough hours in the day…

In addition to dancing and playing softball, I took acting classes as a child and was in the play “Tom Sawyer.” I still remember most of the songs from the play and cherish the diamond and sapphire necklace my dad gave me on opening night.

I started a babysitter’s club (a la the famous “Babysitters Club” book series) in fifth grade with my three best friends. I think we booked one sitting job. Nailed it.

I love reality tv. My hub doesn’t understand why I enjoy spending my time watching other people’s lives. I don’t either. But man do I love me some mindless entertainment.

Despite the sentence fragments and run-on sentences that decorate my blog posts, I am a grammar fanatic. Ahh, perfectionism at its finest.

I am a published author. In several Neuropsychology journals. However, one of my greatest ambitions is to get the children’s book I recently wrote published. So far, no dice, but trust me. I’ll get it published even if I have to do it myself.

I absolutely hate mayonnaise. As in, will full-on gag at the thought or smell of it. I won’t tell you what happens if I accidently taste it. And don’t even get me started on mustard.

My hub and I lived apart for a year while I was completing my pre-doctoral internship. I was in Minneapolis while he was holding down the fort at our home in Atlanta. It was a crazy, busy, hard year, one that was both the fastest and slowest of my life.

We have a miniature yorkie, Cooper, who was a wedding gift from our siblings. He turned 8 in May, although I think he would say that his most memorable birthday was his 3rd (which is 21 in dog years), when we did a photo shoot of him “passed out” while surrounded by mini bottles. You know what they say about little dogs and their alcohol tolerance…

My favorite food in the whole world is mashed potatoes and gravy, with snow crab legs being a very close second. And a meal with both? My mind pretty much explodes.

I have had two breast cancer scares. I have had two surgeries to remove what we now know were benign tumors. Breast cancer runs in my family. This terrifies me.

I have deep, dark secrets that I am not willing to share with anyone…except my hub…

When my mom was pregnant with me, I was due on December 26th. My mom was planning to name me Noel. Luckily, I was born 9 days early. Even more luckily, she came to her senses.

One of my favorite memories from my wedding weekend was when the skies suddenly opened up in a torrential downpour during our wedding rehearsal. Which was outside. In the middle of an unsheltered garden. Our wedding party, our wedding coordinator, our parents, our pastor, us-we were all stuck in the middle of this beautiful garden. Being drenched. I was wearing a white dress (wet t-shirt contest, anyone?). We ran for cover, which was quite a hike, and reconvened at our rehearsal dinner location an hour later, after changing our clothes and wringing out our hair. We got married in the garden the next day, without a drop of rain upon us.

So, there you have it.

On a side note, wish us luck as we go in search of our new home this weekend...
